Every case, every film, is different. What is okay, what is not okay, depends upon context and intent. Children take the film classifications (at the moment U, PG, 15, 18) not as warnings, but as permissions. They wait to be 15, (or appear to be 15) in order to see the ‘15’ film. ‘Now I am old enough to swear at my mother. 18? At last, at last, grown-up enough to rape the girl next door!’ (Do not believe young men identify with the terrors of the raped; they share the pleasure of the rapist. It is a real turn-on.) Watch any of Winner’s ‘Death Wish’ films – you who read this – go and see them. Perhaps film censorship, if censorship we have, should not be for the viewer, but imposed at the maker’s end – as it is, most films are made to the extreme of sadistic violence, and edited down to the outer limit of what the censor permits in each category in each country. So many frames of raped flesh, so many frames of knives cutting breasts, so many frames of foaming blood, of tortured faces – or else let the whole thing go free, as many European countries do. Let those who need the fantasy-fodder for masturbation seek it out, and those who want to make it, make it: but let us not offer it to our young as their proper diet, as we do at the moment.
